Northern Tanzania beyond the great parks: the Hadzabe of Lake Eyasi, Lake Natron beneath the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, the Materuni waterfalls on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. With the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater in between.

Why it is unique

It brings together three peoples, the Hadzabe, the Maasai and the Chagga, and two areas the classic circuit does not reach: Lake Natron and the slopes of Kilimanjaro. The Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater remain, but they are one part of the journey, not the whole of it.

The places

The Hadzabe of Lake Eyasi number little more than a thousand people and still live largely by hunting and gathering. Lake Natron, in the Rift Valley, is the main breeding ground of the lesser flamingo in East Africa; above it rises Ol Doinyo Lengai, around 3,650 metres, the only active volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. In Arusha National Park, at the foot of Mount Meru, you can walk with a ranger. On the slopes of Kilimanjaro the Materuni waterfall drops some 80 metres, among Chagga villages and coffee plantations.

When to go

The dry season, from June to October, is the most comfortable for the tracks. At Lake Natron it is very hot in the middle of the day in every month of the year.

What the journey is like

Many hours on the road, with demanding dirt tracks towards Natron. Visits to the communities are made with local guides: this is a journey for those who would rather understand than collect sightings.

Good to know

A visa for Tanzania and the compulsory NIC insurance (US$44) are required. Accommodation is upper-mid-range and is named in the quote.

ideal good low season not recommended

Best time: January – February and June – October. Also good in March and November – December. Tap a month to use it in your quote request.

The climate, season by season
Jun–Oct · Dry season
Days between 24 and 28 °C, cool nights of 12–15 °C; on the rim of Ngorongoro, at 2,300 metres, it drops below 10 °C at dawn. Short grass and animals close to water: easier sightings, dusty tracks. You’ll need a jacket for morning game drives.
Nov–Dec · Short rains
Brief showers, usually in the afternoon, with 25–29 °C. The landscape turns green again and the herds move down to the southern Serengeti. Fewer vehicles at sightings.
Jan–Mar · Short dry season
Warm, 27–30 °C, with occasional rain. On the Ndutu plains the wildebeest calves are born and predators are at their most active.
Apr–May · Long rains
Frequent, heavy rain, some muddy tracks and several seasonal camps closed.
