Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about costs, documents, seasons and organisation. If yours isn’t here, write to us: we reply within one working day.
What does a safari really cost?
Our itineraries start from €3,120 per person for Kenya and go up to €6,690 for Kenya and Tanzania following the Great Migration. Prices include ground services, international flights from Italy and medical, baggage and cancellation insurance: they are not teaser prices to which everything else is then added.
Visa, tips, drinks with meals and personal expenses are excluded, and listed item by item on every itinerary page.
Why are prices indicative?
Because they vary with the season, the number of travellers and the actual availability of lodges at the time of your request. The same itinerary costs more in high season than in March, and two people pay more each than six.
When you enquire, you receive a firm quote, with named properties and the final total.
Can I change an itinerary I see on the website?
Yes, and that is what happens almost every time. Nights are added or removed, parks or properties are changed, a beach extension is included. The itineraries we publish are a starting point, not a closed package.
If you would rather start from scratch, use the trip planner.
When do I pay, and what happens if I cancel?
After accepting the proposal you pay a 30% deposit within 3 days; the balance is due 30 days before departure. If you book less than 30 days before departure, deposit and balance are both due within 3 days of acceptance.
If you cancel up to 30 days before departure the charge equals the deposit, 30%; from 29 days before it is 100%. You pay no charge if unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances at the destination compromise the trip. That is why cancellation insurance is included in our trips: it reimburses the charge in the cases covered by the policy. Full details in the general terms and conditions.
How far in advance should I book?
For the dry season, from June to October, plan six to eight months ahead: the best camps in the Serengeti and the rooms in small lodges sell out early. For the Great Migration at Ndutu, between January and February, even earlier.
In the shoulder seasons, three months is enough.
How do I confirm a trip?
When you are happy with the programme we send you an online proposal, with all the information about the trip, the general terms and conditions and the information form. To accept it, by the date shown, you tick two boxes, enter your invoicing details and type your name: no paper signatures or scans.
Straight afterwards you receive the contract as a PDF by email and, within 3 days, you pay the deposit.
How can I pay?
The 30% deposit by card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay or Google Pay) or by bank transfer; the balance, 30 days before departure, by bank transfer only, preferably instant. No extra charges. By card you pay on Stripe’s secure page: your card details do not pass through our servers.
We never change our IBAN by email: if you receive bank details different from those in the contract and in the “My trip” area, call us before paying. Full details in How to pay.
Will I get an invoice?
Yes. For every payment you receive a receipt by email, which is not a tax document; the invoice is issued once payment is complete, or at the latest at the start of the trip, under the special VAT scheme for travel agencies, with no VAT shown separately.
You enter your invoicing details, including company details, when you accept the proposal, and you can correct them in the area until the balance is paid.
What is the “My trip” area?
It is your trip’s page on our website: proposal, contract, programme, documents, receipts, due dates, checklist and 24-hour assistance all in one place. No password needed: you log in with the booking code and the surname of one of the travellers, or with the personal link we email you, which works once and for 7 days.
This is also where you enter the traveller details needed for tickets, insurance and local bookings. The rules of use are in the client area terms.
What happens to passport and health data?
We use them only for the trip: to issue tickets and insurance policies, for local bookings and to tell lodges and guides about diets and allergies. They are stored encrypted, we ask each traveller for explicit consent for health data, and we delete them 30 days after your return.
If you enter your travel companions’ details, let them know and ask for their consent for any health data. Full details in the privacy notice.
What documents do I need?
A passport with at least six months’ remaining validity and one blank page. Visas differ from country to country: Tanzania $50, Kenya the $30 eTA required for everyone, Madagascar €30 for stays of up to 15 days, Namibia around €80 since 2025.
Kenya, mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar also require compulsory local health insurance, at $44. You will find everything on the country pages, and we go through the documents together before departure.
Do I need vaccinations?
No vaccinations are compulsory for travellers departing from Italy. A yellow fever certificate is required only from those arriving from, or who have transited through, a country at risk.
Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for all our destinations: arrange it with your doctor or a travel medicine clinic a few weeks in advance.
Can I travel with children?
Yes. Many lodges and tented camps set a minimum age, usually six, because they are in unfenced areas. In our experience, a safari works well from the age of seven or eight.
With children we change the pace: fewer parks, shorter transfers, a private vehicle and often an internal flight instead of seven hours on the track.
Is the safari shared or private?
All our safaris are private: a 4×4 with a pop-up roof just for you, an Italian-speaking guide and unlimited mileage. You set off and return when you wish, and stop wherever you like.
On request, the group can be opened to others to keep costs down.
What happens if something goes wrong during the journey?
You have a direct contact, reachable before departure and throughout your journey. Not a call centre: the person who built your itinerary.
Our partners in Tanzania include AMREF Flying Doctors health cover, which covers air ambulance evacuation to hospitals in Nairobi.
Do you organise trips outside Africa too?
Yes, on request. Africa is our speciality, but Weltweg is part of the Trinova group, which also organises trips to other destinations. Tell us where you would like to go: write to us and we will put you in touch with the right people.
