For those who want to set foot on Kilimanjaro without attempting the summit. A day’s trekking on the Lemosho route, the most scenic and least crowded, followed by six days of safari as far as the northern Serengeti. Return domestic flight included.

Why it is unique

It takes onto Kilimanjaro those who would rather not, or cannot, undertake a climb of several days: a day on the Lemosho route, from rainforest to the heather zone as far as Mti Mkubwa Camp and back. Then a safari that reaches the northern Serengeti and the Mara River, where few eight-day itineraries venture, with a domestic flight from Seronera that avoids the long drive back.

What the journey is like

The day on Kilimanjaro is demanding and suited to those who are fit. The rest is by private 4x4 jeep with pop-up roof and an Italian- or English-speaking guide: the village of Mto wa Mbu and its plantations, the descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, the Seronera valley and the north of the Serengeti, with nights in tented camps.

When to go

From June to October the Serengeti is dry; between July and September the Mara River crossings take place in the north. April and May, the months of the long rains, are not recommended, for trekking either.

Good to know

The Tanzanian visa, the compulsory NIC insurance (US$44) and tips for guides and porters are not included. There are baggage weight limits on the domestic flight: we will give you the details with your quote.

What you might see

  • Lion Very likely

The Serengeti and Ngorongoro have some of the highest densities in Africa.

  • Elephant Very likely

Large herds in Tarangire, especially in the dry season.

  • Giraffe, zebra and buffalo Very likely

Found in all the northern parks.

  • Hippo Very likely

In the pools at Seronera and in the crater.

  • Migrating wildebeest Likely

All year round, but in great numbers only where the herds are passing that month.

  • Cheetah Likely

On the open plains of the Serengeti and Ndutu.

  • Leopard Likely

In the acacias along the rivers: patience is needed.

  • Black rhino Unlikely

Almost exclusively in the Ngorongoro Crater, usually at a distance.

Indicative estimates. Nature can’t be booked: your guide knows where to look, but can’t guarantee a sighting.

The climate, season by season

Kilimanjaro

Jan–Mar · Warm window
More settled, warmer weather at lower altitudes; the summit is often free of cloud. Up high, at night, it drops below −10 °C with the wind.
Jun–Oct · Dry window
The busiest season: settled skies and dry trails, colder at altitude than in January.
Apr–May and Nov · Rains
Long rains in April and May, short rains in November: muddy trails, poor visibility and possible snow up high.

Northern Tanzania

Jun–Oct · Dry season
Days between 24 and 28 °C, cool nights of 12–15 °C; on the rim of Ngorongoro, at 2,300 metres, it drops below 10 °C at dawn. Short grass and animals close to water: easier sightings, dusty tracks. You’ll need a jacket for morning game drives.
Nov–Dec · Short rains
Brief showers, usually in the afternoon, with 25–29 °C. The landscape turns green again and the herds move down to the southern Serengeti. Fewer vehicles at sightings.
Jan–Mar · Short dry season
Warm, 27–30 °C, with occasional rain. On the Ndutu plains the wildebeest calves are born and predators are at their most active.
Apr–May · Long rains
Frequent, heavy rain, some muddy tracks and several seasonal camps closed.
