From Tarangire to the Indian Ocean coast, far from the crowded circuits: the Mkomazi rhino sanctuary, the beaches of Pangani and Saadani, one of the few African parks that look out over the sea.

Why it is unique

It is a safari built where vehicles are few. Mkomazi National Park borders Kenya’s Tsavo and is home to a black rhino sanctuary supported by the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust, which also runs a programme for the African wild dog. Pangani is an old Swahili port at the mouth of the river of the same name. Saadani is the only national park in Tanzania on the Indian Ocean: the savannah runs right down to the beach, and there are boat trips on the Wami River.

When to go

The dry season, from June to October, is the most suitable. The coast is hot and humid all year round; the long rains fall between April and May.

What the journey is like

The pace is slower than on the northern circuit and the wildlife less concentrated: in return, sightings are almost always enjoyed without other vehicles. Two days by the sea at Pangani break the journey halfway.

Good to know

A visa for Tanzania and the compulsory NIC insurance (US$44) are required. Visits to the rhino sanctuary are regulated and must be confirmed in the quote. The return flight to Italy departs from Dar es Salaam.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1Day 1Tarangire

A first photo safari in Tarangire, the park of baobabs and elephants, which gather along the river in the dry season.

  2. 2Day 2Tarangire and Moshi

Morning in the park, then transfer to Moshi, a small town at the foot of Kilimanjaro, for the night.

  3. 3Day 3Mkomazi

Transfer to Mkomazi National Park, semi-arid savannah on the border with Kenya’s Tsavo and well away from the busier circuits. A first photo safari among oryx, gerenuk and giraffes.

  4. 4Day 4Mkomazi and the Rhino Sanctuary

Photo safari and a visit to the sanctuary that protects the black rhino, one of the most important conservation projects in the country.

  5. 5–6Days 5-6Pangani

Two days on the coast at Pangani, an old Swahili port at the mouth of the river of the same name: quiet beaches and the old town, whose houses tell of centuries of trade across the Indian Ocean.

  6. 7Day 7Saadani

Photo safari in Saadani National Park, where the savannah runs down to the beach: elephants, giraffes, buffalo and, along the Wami River, hippos and crocodiles.

  7. 8Day 8Dar es Salaam

Transfer along the coast to Dar es Salaam for the return flight.
