The climb to Uhuru Peak, 5,895 metres, by the Lemosho route: one of the most scenic and, thanks to the days on the Shira plateau, one of the best for acclimatisation. No ropes or mountaineering experience are needed, but good fitness and respect for altitude are.

Why this route

The Lemosho starts on the western side, less busy than the southern one, crosses the Shira plateau and joins the Machame route below the Barranco Wall. The extra days at altitude are for acclimatisation, the factor that more than any other decides whether you reach the summit.

When to go

The driest periods are from January to early March and from June to October. April and May, with the long rains, are the most difficult months; the short rains arrive in November.

What preparation is needed

No mountaineering experience is required, but you must be able to manage 5 to 8 hours of walking a day for several days in a row, and a final night-time ascent in the cold. Altitude sickness strikes regardless of fitness: a medical check-up is needed before departure, and the guide may halt the climb for safety reasons.

Documents and rules

The minimum age for the summit is 10. A visa for Tanzania and the compulsory NIC insurance (US$44) are required. Check that your insurance covers high-altitude trekking.
