Our most requested combination: six days of safari in the northern parks, then the Indian Ocean. You fly from Arusha to Zanzibar, visit Stone Town and finish at Nungwi, on the northern tip of the island. Domestic flight included.

Why it is unique

It combines the great parks of northern Tanzania with the sea without wasting time on the road: Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti and Tarangire, then the flight from Arusha to Zanzibar. The international flight is multi-city, arriving at Kilimanjaro and departing from Zanzibar, so you never retrace your steps.

What the journey is like

The safari is by private 4x4 jeep with pop-up roof, a professional guide and full board, with two full days in the Serengeti and a final game drive in Tarangire among baobabs and elephants. On Zanzibar, a night in Stone Town, the UNESCO-listed old town, with an excursion to Prison Island; then Nungwi and a morning by boat along the north coast.

When to go

The best periods are June to October and January to February, when both the parks and the coast are dry; December, after the short rains, is still a good month. April and May are rainy on both fronts.

Good to know

The Tanzanian visa and the compulsory local insurance (NIC or ZIC, depending on where you enter) are not included; on the island the arrangement is half board. The migrating herds can be seen in the central Serengeti only at certain times of year.

Day-by-day itinerary

Meeting with the driver-guide, a short briefing and transfer to the Arusha Farm House for dinner and overnight.

  4. 4Day 4Central Serengeti

Safari towards the Seronera area, the part of the park with the greatest density of wildlife, where the river draws almost every species in the Serengeti.

  5. 5Day 5Serengeti, full day

Departure at dawn: hippos and crocodiles in the pools, prides of lions and, depending on the season, the migrating herds.

  6. 6Day 6Towards Manyara

Transfer and a relaxing afternoon at the Manyara Secret Lodge, overlooking the lake.

  7. 7Day 7Tarangire National Park

Indicative estimates. Nature can’t be booked: your guide knows where to look, but can’t guarantee a sighting.

The climate, season by season

Northern Tanzania

Jun–Oct · Dry season
Days between 24 and 28 °C, cool nights of 12–15 °C; on the rim of Ngorongoro, at 2,300 metres, it drops below 10 °C at dawn. Short grass and animals close to water: easier sightings, dusty tracks. You’ll need a jacket for morning game drives.
Nov–Dec · Short rains
Brief showers, usually in the afternoon, with 25–29 °C. The landscape turns green again and the herds move down to the southern Serengeti. Fewer vehicles at sightings.
Jan–Mar · Short dry season
Warm, 27–30 °C, with occasional rain. On the Ndutu plains the wildebeest calves are born and predators are at their most active.
Apr–May · Long rains
Frequent, heavy rain, some muddy tracks and several seasonal camps closed.

Zanzibar and Pemba

Jun–Oct · Dry and breezy
Between 27 and 29 °C, low humidity and a steady breeze. It is also high season.
Dec–Feb · Hot with calm seas
Between 30 and 32 °C, calm seas and very clear water.
Mar–May · Long rains
Heavy rain, especially in April: many resorts close for a few weeks.
Nov · Short rains
Brief showers, often followed by sunshine.
