A single journey through both countries of the Great Migration: from Lake Nakuru to the Masai Mara, then the northern and central Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire.

Why it is unique

The Great Migration seen from both sides of the Mara River: first the Masai Mara in Kenya, then the northern Serengeti in Tanzania, where the crossings are concentrated. The journey ends with the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire.

When to go

The right time is between July and October, when the herds are between the Masai Mara and the northern Serengeti. Nobody can guarantee a crossing: the animals set the timing.

Crossing the border

There is no border crossing inside the parks between the Masai Mara and the Serengeti. The crossing is made by road at the Isebania–Sirari border post or by air, and the choice affects timing and cost: we confirm it in the quote.

Good to know

You will need the eTA for Kenya and Kenya’s compulsory health insurance, then a visa and the compulsory NIC insurance for Tanzania. When entering Tanzania from Kenya, a yellow fever vaccination certificate may be requested: what to ask your doctor.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1Day 1Nairobi and Lake Nakuru

Welcome at Nairobi airport and departure towards the Rift Valley. Lake Nakuru, an alkaline lake ringed by acacia forest, is also a sanctuary for white and black rhinos: a first photo safari in the afternoon, if your arrival time allows.

  2. 2Day 2Nakuru and the Masai Mara

Dawn photo safari at Nakuru, then transfer to the Masai Mara through the Rift Valley. Arrival in the afternoon and a first drive in the reserve.

  3. 3Day 3Masai Mara

A full day in the reserve with a packed lunch, following the animals wherever they are without returning to camp. Between July and October the Mara is home to the migrating herds; lions, cheetahs and elephants are there all year round.

  4. 4–5Days 4-5Northern Serengeti

Into Tanzania for two days in the north of the Serengeti, where the Mara River crossings are concentrated between July and October. Two full days give time to wait for them: nobody can predict them, and staying longer in the same area is the only way to improve the odds.

  5. 6Day 6Central Serengeti

Photo safari in the Seronera area, at the heart of the park: rivers, granite outcrops and one of the highest densities of predators in the Serengeti, with leopards in the acacias along the watercourses.

  6. 7Day 7Ngorongoro Crater

Descent into the crater at dawn: an enclosed caldera that is home to thousands of animals all year round and to one of the few black rhino populations in Tanzania. Packed lunch on the crater floor.

  7. 8Day 8Tarangire

Photo safari in the park of baobabs and great herds of elephants, which gather along the Tarangire River in the dry season.

  8. 9Day 9Kilimanjaro foothills and Arusha

A visit to the foothills of Kilimanjaro, among the villages and farmland of the mountain’s lower slopes, and transfer to Arusha for the last night.

  9. 10Day 10Departure

Transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for the return flight.

The climate, season by season

Kenya

Jul–Oct · Dry season and migration
Days between 24 and 28 °C, 12–15 °C at dawn in the Mara. The migration herds are in the Masai Mara and river crossings are possible from late July. High season: more vehicles at sightings.
Dec–Mar · Warm and dry
Between 27 and 30 °C, clear light: from Amboseli Kilimanjaro is often visible. Plenty of young animals in the parks.
Apr–May · Long rains
Frequent rain, muddy tracks, some camps closed.
Nov · Short rains
Showers usually late in the day, green landscapes, few visitors.

Northern Tanzania

Jun–Oct · Dry season
Days between 24 and 28 °C, cool nights of 12–15 °C; on the rim of Ngorongoro, at 2,300 metres, it drops below 10 °C at dawn. Short grass and animals close to water: easier sightings, dusty tracks. You’ll need a jacket for morning game drives.
Nov–Dec · Short rains
Brief showers, usually in the afternoon, with 25–29 °C. The landscape turns green again and the herds move down to the southern Serengeti. Fewer vehicles at sightings.
Jan–Mar · Short dry season
Warm, 27–30 °C, with occasional rain. On the Ndutu plains the wildebeest calves are born and predators are at their most active.
Apr–May · Long rains
Frequent, heavy rain, some muddy tracks and several seasonal camps closed.
