The Route Nationale 7, Madagascar’s classic journey. Rainforest at Ranomafana, the ring-tailed lemurs of the Anja community reserve, the sandstone canyons of Isalo and finally the coral reef at Ifaty. An itinerary that crosses four completely different landscapes.

Why it is unique

In ten days you pass from the rice-terraced highlands to the rainforest of Ranomafana, home to twelve species of lemur including the golden bamboo lemur; from the granite boulders of Anja, home of the ring-tailed lemurs, to the canyons and natural pools of Isalo. The last stretch crosses the spiny forest, with a stop among the baobabs of the Reniala reserve, and reaches the sea at Ifaty, sheltered by the coral reef.

What the journey is like

You travel by road along the RN7 with a private driver and an Italian-speaking guide: the stages are long but the landscape changes constantly, with stops at Antsirabe and at Ambositra, the capital of Zafimaniry woodcarving. At Ranomafana and Isalo you walk on easy trails that are steep and damp in places. At Ifaty there is a day by the sea, with optional snorkelling or a pirogue trip, and you return to the capital by air from Tulear: no retracing the road.

When to go

From April to November, in the dry season. Between September and November many lemur species have their young.

Good to know

The entry visa costs €30 per person and is not included, nor are the optional excursions at Ifaty. In the highlands the evenings are cool even in the warmer months: bring a sweatshirt and a light jacket.
