The itinerary for those who come to Madagascar above all for the lemurs. Analamazaotra park and the call of the indri, the Vakona reserve, aye-ayes by night, a boat journey along the Pangalanes canal and finally the island of Sainte Marie.
It is built around the lemurs. Analamazaotra is home to the indri, the largest living lemur, whose call carries for kilometres; at Vakona and in the Mitsinjo and Peyrieras community reserves you see other species up close, along with endemic chameleons and geckos, and at night you go out in search of the aye-aye. Then the Pangalanes canal by boat and three days on the island of Sainte Marie.
The pace is relaxed: transfers by road and by boat with a private driver and an Italian-speaking guide, walks in the rainforest and one night outing. On Sainte Marie the days are free to enjoy beaches, bays and the pirate cemetery, with the option of visiting Ile aux Nattes. You return to the capital by air.
The best time is from August to November. From July to September humpback whales arrive off Sainte Marie.
The entry visa, €30 per person, is not included, nor is the whale-watching excursion. In Andasibe it often rains even in the best months, and July is cool: bring a light waterproof and a fleece.
