The road west is long and not always easy, and that is precisely why it is worth it. You cross the highlands, descend to Morondava and reach the Tsingy de Bemaraha, a UNESCO World Heritage forest of limestone pinnacles. On the way back, the Avenue of the Baobabs at sunset.
The Tsingy de Bemaraha are a forest of stone: razor-sharp limestone spires crossed by suspension bridges and fixed-rope passages. Getting there takes two days on the road and two river crossings by barge, and that is what keeps the crowds away. On the return, the Avenue of the Baobabs: Adansonia grandidieri up to thirty metres tall, best seen at sunset.
It is the most adventurous of our Madagascar itineraries. You travel by private 4x4 with a driver and an Italian-speaking guide; the transfer days are long and the track to Bekopaka is unpaved. Visiting the Tsingy requires good mobility and a head for heights. After the park there is a free day on the coast at Morondava, then the flight to the capital.
Only in the dry season, roughly from May to November: in the rains the track becomes impassable and the Grands Tsingy park closes.
The entry visa, €30 per person, and the single supplement are not included. On the sharp rocks, walking boots with stiff soles and a pair of light gloves help.
Welcome at the airport and transfer to the hotel.
