Three days of trekking on three different mountains, then the Masai Mara. This is the journey for those who would rather not spend ten days sitting in a jeep: Mount Kenya, Hell’s Gate on foot or by bike, Mount Longonot and its caldera, and finally the wide open spaces of the reserve.

Why it is unique

It is a journey through Kenya made largely on foot. Mount Kenya along the Sirimon route, from rainforest to high-altitude moorland; Hell’s Gate, the park of gorges, rock towers and hot springs, by bicycle or on foot; the rim of the Longonot crater with views over Lake Naivasha. In between, the Aberdares with a night at Treetops Lodge, Crescent Island on foot and, to finish, a full day of game drives in the Masai Mara.

What the journey is like

A reasonable level of fitness is needed: on Mount Kenya you start at 2,650 metres and walk 9 km back down, and Longonot is a 3.1 km climb to the crater rim. You travel in a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof and a driver-guide; on the evening before the Mara there is a visit to a Maasai manyatta. On the last day, lunch at the Carnivore in Nairobi, then your flight or an extension to the beach at Diani.

When to go

June to October and January to February, the driest months. In April and May the trails turn muddy.

Good to know

You will need the eTA electronic travel authorisation and, since 5 October 2026, Kenya’s compulsory health insurance (US$44). At altitude it is cold even on the equator: bring layers, a waterproof jacket and walking boots. Mandatory supplements apply at Easter and New Year.
