Eight days in the Egypt of the pharaohs: four nights cruising the Nile from Luxor to Aswan, with Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae, and three nights in Cairo with the pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The price includes the direct flight, the domestic flight Aswan–Cairo, visits with an Italian-speaking Egyptologist guide, entrance fees, the entry visa and insurance.
You travel up the Nile as nineteenth-century travellers did, sleeping on board: the temples are a few minutes from the mooring and the ship is your hotel. In Cairo the new Grand Egyptian Museum holds the treasures of Tutankhamun a short distance from the pyramids of Giza.
Departures every Saturday until the end of May. From November to February the days are mild and the evenings cool: the best time for sightseeing. In April and May Aswan and Luxor often go above 35 degrees. Christmas, New Year and Easter departures cost more.
This is a group trip, not a private one: an Italian-speaking Egyptologist guide and a local tour leader throughout, with groups of 2 to 45 people formed on arrival and travelling by coach or minivan. Four nights on the Royal Beau Rivage, a superior 5-star ship, or one of the same category, on full board, and three nights at the Tolip El Narges in Cairo, 5 stars, or similar, on half board with lunches during the visits.
You need a passport valid for at least six months, or an Italian identity card valid for travel abroad with two passport photos; the visa is included and handed over on arrival in Luxor. Abu Simbel, the Nubian village and Cairo by night are optional excursions at extra cost. The price is based on fuel at 750 dollars a tonne: any adjustment is notified within 21 days of departure. The “from” price applies to the departures of 9, 16 and 30 January; other dates cost more.
Direct flight to Luxor. On arrival an assistant hands over your visa before customs; the guide and tour leader wait at the exit. Transfer to the ship, dinner and overnight on board.
Full board on board. On the west bank the Valley of the Kings, the temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon; on the east bank the temples of Karnak and Luxor. Sailing towards Edfu, through the Esna lock.
Full board on board. In the morning the temple of Horus at Edfu, one of the best preserved in Egypt; in the afternoon the temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to Sobek and Haroeris. Sailing towards Aswan and an Egyptian evening in costume.
Full board on board. A day in Aswan with two optional excursions: at dawn the temple of Abu Simbel, 280 kilometres away on Lake Nasser, and in the afternoon the Nubian village by motorboat. Nubian show on board in the evening.
Breakfast, visit to the High Dam and to the temple of Isis on the island of Philae, by motorboat. Lunch on board, then the flight to Cairo. Transfer to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
The step pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, the ancient capital Memphis and, in the afternoon, the Giza plateau with the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and the Sphinx. Lunch at a restaurant, dinner and overnight at the hotel.
In the morning the Grand Egyptian Museum, with the treasures of Tutankhamun. Lunch at a restaurant, then the Citadel of Saladin with the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Dinner at the hotel; Cairo by night is optional.
Breakfast and transfer to the airport for the flight back to Italy.
Along the banks of the Nile, from the ship.
In the reed beds between Edfu and Aswan.
Indicative estimates. Nature can’t be booked: your guide knows where to look, but can’t guarantee a sighting.
