Narok County, which manages the Masai Mara reserve, applies a seasonal fee to non-resident visitors: $100 per adult per day from January to June, $200 from July to December, that is, during the months of the Great Migration. Children aged 9 to 17 pay $50, and younger children enter free.
A ticket per day, not per 24 hours
The ticket covers the day of the visit, from dawn to dusk, rather than a 24-hour period. Anyone entering and leaving several times, or arriving in the afternoon and departing the following morning, should check how the days are counted: multiplied by the number of people, it is an item that moves significant sums.
What it means for the budget
For two adults, four days in the reserve in August mean $1,600 in entry fees alone, against $800 in March. The conservancies around the reserve apply their own fees and rules, while the Mara Triangle, the western section managed by the Mara Conservancy, follows the same fees as the reserve and accepts only electronic payments.
What to check in a quote
When comparing two proposals, check that entry fees are included and for how many days. It is one of the items that most often separates a seemingly low price from the real cost of the trip.
Fees and rules may change: always check the official sources listed before you travel.
